I hate when the media makes The Hunger Games look like a battle for love. Get your bullshit fantasies away. This is about murder, over powered government, and a girl trying to change the way things are. News flash not every girls fantasy is to find true love.
the irony here is that our media is doing exactly what the Capitol did in the books; downplaying the murder, focusing on the bullshit love story
I hate how it’s marketed too but in all honest Katniss doesn’t do a whole lot to rebel on purpose. She’s pretty preoccupied with saving her people. She does things that spark revolution but 98% of the time they aren’t on purpose. Is this book about revolution and changing the status quo? Yes. Absolutely. But I feel like in all honesty I feel like this book is less about Katniss and more about the fact that our lives are more powerful than we realize. That we are important even when we don’t know what’s going on. It’s not so much about Katniss as it is about the rebellion as a whole and her being the vessel. I don’t think it’s as much about a girl as everyone makes it out to be.
^^ Yes yes
The reason why THG works so well as a young adult series is that Katniss is NOT trying to change the world. She is one 16 year old! So many of these other dystopia novels feature very young people going out of their way to save the whole world when REAL 16 year olds don’t even understand themselves yet (ie see Katniss’ feelings).
Also I want to point out that the film marketers know what they are doing (with the capitol couture and having real life designer “join” The Capitol). They know it’s disturbing. It’s just taken a while for the public to notice.
However the Subway campaign is not a good touch.
I love that now that Catching Fire is out more people are picking up on some of these discussion points that I have been harping on to myself for a while.
